Yuletide Roundup

I wrote a lot this year and everything was very well received to my astonishment.

This Fic Has Everything - SNL, Seth/Stefon, 2140 words, Teen and Up for Snacky - This was my assignment and finally gave me an excuse to write Stefon fic, something I’ve intended to do for a few years now. It also gave me the excuse to remind everyone that Anderson Cooper is Gloria Vanderbilt’s son like ten times over.

Don’t Stop, Make It Pop - How to Get Away with Murder, Connor/Asher, 3800 words, Explicit for tricatular - AKA, the fic I wrote to have an excuse to write douchebags acting douchey while pretending to be boyfriends and also, you know, ignore the entire purpose of the show. SO OF COURSE IT WAS MY MOST POPULAR YULETIDE FIC EVER! \o/ lol I honestly love Yuletide the most of all fandom-related things.

The Art of Shutting the Fuck Up  - The Raven Cycle, Adam/Ronan, 2600 words, Explicit for Isis - This originally had a thoughtful title, which two hours before the collection went live, I changed to this. To be honest, I like this one a lot more. Basically just Adam being manipulative while grieving and then they do it. Also, I threw in Cabeswater because who can resist a magical ancient forest?

Hey Baby (Drop It to the Floor) - Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Jake/Amy (but in the way that the show is Jake/Amy), 2300 words, General audiences for mardia - I wanted Jake, Amy, and Holt to hold babies, so that’s what I wrote. I also wanted Jake to make stupid jokes, so I also wrote that. It worked out pretty well!

Time Enough, But None to Spare - The Raven Cycle, Blue/Gansey, implied Adam/Ronan, 20,700 words, Teen and up for thenewradical - lol there was a day I made a post to tumblr saying that a treat was turning out longer than my assignment. This was the one I was writing, and I proceeded to add EIGHTEEN THOUSAND MORE WORDS TO IT. Ugh. But this is also the best fic I wrote, in my opinion. It’s all Blue’s POV, kind of what possibly could happen to about the halfway point in book 4, but mostly an excuse to get Blue and Gansey into increasingly awkward situations around all the plot. WHO WRITES A 20,000 WORD TREAT HONESTLY.

Tired of Waiting for You - The Raven Cycle, Ronan & Blue gen, 400 words, Teen and up for shoemaster - My one Madness story and also the only fic to date that I’ve ever written completely on my phone. :D Ronan hanging out in front of Blue’s school because why not?

YEAH SO THAT WAS A LOT OF FIC. Maybe I won’t go ten months without writing anything this year.

Yuletide Recs (Yuletide Madness - ALL)

I finished my reading, yay! These are all from the poor neglected Madness collection.

New Tune, Same Fiddle - Fiddler on the Roof, Tevye gen, G, 985 words by Meltha - Fic set a few years after the events of the musical, written in the style of one of Tevye’s monologues/prayers and it. is. dead. on. Seriously, this could have been the show’s epilogue, that’s how good it is.

stake me out tonight - How to Get Away with Murder, Connor/Asher, T, 530 words by tricatular - These two losers being losers together. I love how all Asher fic mostly seems to ignore the premise of the show and sounds like it’s lifted from some sitcom fandom instead. It’s great.

His Soul to Keep - Miss Saigon, Tam gen, T, 665 words by Arsenic - Second year in a row I’m reccing a Tam futurefic. His life is so sad and I just want good things for him. (ETA: Arsenic also wrote the Tam fic I recced last year!)

Social Captial - Revenge, Nolan/Emily, G, 885 words by smilebackwards - I know from experience that these two are hard as hell to write, so I appreciate everyone who tries. And this one succeeds admirably! lol Emily immediately offering that the blood she’s covered in isn’t hers.

Only have to read through the Madness collection now and I get an extra day for those reveals. :D

Momentary Lapse - Veep, Dan/Amy, T, 1200 words by Suaine - Dan and Amy don’t really hate each other that much. This has good use of both of them, but I especially liked Amy. This makes sense because I like Amy more than Dan in general.

If It’s Sewing, She Sews - West Side Story, Maria gen, G, 3100 words by Mithrigil - A sweet, sad little story about what Maria does after Tony and Bernardo’s deaths and how she goes forward and lives her life. Very moving story.

Meet Yourself Coming From the Other Direction - Wreck-It Ralph, Calhoun/Felix, G, 2700 words by Merlin Missy (mtgat) - Another Hero’s Duty machine is added to the arcade, and Calhoun introduces herself to herself. Fun (and affecting) little story about parallel universes in the video game world.

Maybe There’s a Word for It - Zoolander, Derek/Matilda/Hansel, M, 3800 words by Febricant - Derek doesn’t really mean to make a comeback, but he does. Featuring 10-year-old Derek, Jr., who has an even better Blue Steel than his father. So cute, so funny.

Guilt Scotch & Geese - How to Get Away with Murder, Gen, T, 2000 words by imperfectcircle and such_heights - The Keating Five gets drunk and people draw dicks on Asher’s face. Then Annalise is sweet! It’s everything I want in a HTGAWM fic.

Critical Mass - Mad Men, Peggy/Stan, T, 3300 words by SuburbanSun - Peggy has to bring someone to Christmas dinner and Stan volunteers. Stan is just hilarious and the fic is totally adorable.

They Take Their Shots (We’re Bulletproof) - The Mindy Project, Mindy/Danny, T, 7700 words by SuburbanSun - Adorable fic about five times Mindy and Danny were caught under the mistletoe and one time they weren’t. The voices are spot-on and the kissing is super sweet.

I guess this turned out to be the SuburbanSun rec post!

Yuletide 2014 - I guess I need a tag for that

I did my Yuletide nominations on the first day, which I think is the first time that’s ever happened. And then I didn’t update anywhere saying I made them, which is definitely the first time that’s ever happened! I suppose it’s easier when you can only nominate three fandoms and four characters in each fandom. So much compartmentilization that you have to make some decisions.

I nominated:

Brooklyn Nine-Nine - Jake, Amy, Holt, Terry (Rosa and Gina have also been nominated by someone who’s not me)

Raven Cycle - Maggie Stiefvater - Blue, Gansey, Adam, Ronan

Friday Night Lights - Coach, Mrs. Coach, Julie, Tim (and someone else nominated Landry, Tyra, Matt Saracen, and Jason Street, which made me super duper happy)

Does anyone who follows me not know what Yuletide is? Well, I guess just in case anyone’s dying of curiosity, it’s a multifandom fic fest with reveals on Christmas day. It’s ostensibly for small fandoms, but it really works out to be for small, medium, and all new fandoms in practice. If a fandom has fewer than 1000 fics of over 1000 words, complete, and in English on archiveofourown.org (AO3) and fanfiction.net combined, then it qualifies for Yuletide.

Fics just have to adhere to the recipient’s requested fandom and characters and be over 1000 words, and you get to pick which fandoms/characters you’re willing to write. Easy peasy! Plus, you get a fic of your own right back! Anyone with an AO3 account can play, and anyone can get an AO3 account, so really anyone can play.

Full list of rules are here, though don’t be intimidated by them unless you have a borderline fandom. I don’t really pay much attention to them.
