The Supreme Court on Monday struck two key provisions of a sweeping anti-abortion law in Texas, granting abortion rights supports their most significant legal victory in a generation. Justice Anthony Kennedy sided with the court’s liberals in the 5-3 decision that found Texas had placed unconstitutional burdens on women seeking abortion. It marks the first time the court has imposed limits on state abortion restrictions in more than 15 years and pushes back against a wave of restrictive state laws enacted in recent years.

“We conclude that neither of these provisions offers medical benefits sufficient to justify the burdens upon access that each imposes,” Justice Stephen Breyer wrote for the court.

The ruling is likely to galvanize anti-abortion votes in the presidential race and highlight the political fight over who will be appointed to the vacant seat on the Supreme Court. Anti-abortion groups were hoping to enact laws similar to Texas in other parts of the country. A handful of states had already done so; those laws are now likely to face immediate challenges in the lower courts.

In Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, a group of Texas abortion clinics challenged the state law that required abortion providers to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital and to perform abortions only in ambulatory surgical centers.

Opponents of the law said the restrictions have already closed half of the state’s abortion clinics, imposing an undue burden on a woman’s access to abortion. Texas argued that states have a long-standing right to regulate medical procedures to ensure patient safety.

That was definitely not your father’s C-SPAN.

Wednesday’s dramatic protest on the House floor over gun control was a powerful reminder of how dramatically the cable network’s role as the official chronicler of Congress has changed since its early years — and how technology has suddenly made C-SPAN less beholden to the congressional leaders who control its video feed inside the chambers.

It all unfolded quickly: When the sit-in began Wednesday morning, Republican leaders ordered the House into recess. And since only they, and not C-SPAN, oversee the camera, C-SPAN’s feed was cut off, as dictated by the chamber’s rules.

It’s awesome that C-SPAN no longer has to rely solely on House-controlled cameras. Live feed here.

President Obama issues historic declaration for transgender bathroom rights in schools

The White House is expected to issue a sweeping guidance Friday to the nation’s public schools mandating they take immediate steps to allow students to use whichever bathroom they feel best corresponds to their gender identity. If school districts refuse, they could face real consequences.

Update: It just got better. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has ruled that ACA health care providers must provide coverage — including medical services related to gender reassignment — to transgender individuals. This news, like this morning’s declaration, is pretty damn groundbreaking.

You must’ve been sleep the whole time of his presidency because President Obama changed this country for the better and I shudder to think what my life would be like had he not have two terms.

Just a few things I’ve personally gained from his presidency:
*staying on my parents insurance till I was 26
*the federal government paying half my premium when I turned 27
*My IUD being completely free so I don’t have to worry about getting pregnant for the next 3 years.
*Being able to attend my gay best friend’s wedding and it actually being legal.

He may not have achieved everything he wanted too but I will forever be grateful for the change my Black President brought to this country.

really sick of children who are obviously too fucking young to have clear memories of the Bush Administration acting like Democrats and Republicans are no different

I get it, you’ve spent 8 years of your very young life with a Democratic president.  You’re probably not old enough to have vivid memories of Katrina, the beginning of the Iraq War, and 9/11 (all things that would have been a lot less likely to happen under a Dem president – yes, even 9/11.  Bush Administration ignored intelligence warnings and also immediately dismantled the Clinton Anti-Terror apparatus – 9/11 was completely preventable), but please stop saying that stupid shit if you don’t have a life memory.

oh btw Obama also SIGNIFICANTLY expanded Pell Grants and introduced really nice education tax credits that made it possible for me to get an education.

politics no he did not achieve everything he wanted but he got a LOT accomplished under a TERRIBLE REPUBLICAN CONGRESS stop discounting that shit president barack obama anyone who says the two parties are the same seems to be one of four things too young to remember otherwise stupid a straight white man or trying to shut down your reasonable argument

now that donald trump is the actual GOP nominee this is your reminder that voting for a Democrat You Hate is still a useful harm reduction procedure that will cancel out a vote for Trump. please practice harm reduction. please, even more importantly in small/red states, vote all the way down in your local races where the margins of victory can be 100 votes or 10 votes, so your state legislature/governor/etc will be strong, if/when everything on the national level goes to hell

believe what you want about your vote not having the intended or ideal level of power, believe what you want about the electoral college or the modern role of voting in a democratic society, believe what you want about american centrism or flawed systems, but don’t let anyone tell you there’s “no difference” in the general election, please don’t let anyone tell you voting does nothing. your vote CAN and WILL protect vulnerable people and help you stand in for people whose votes are being taken away by a gutted VRA and gerrymandering

please. please vote tuesday november 8th. please.

i absolutely don't hate hillary i will start out saying that but my real point in reblogging this is if you don't vote for downticket races you are dumb vote for your damn local races politics
