“Lollback said 13 restaurants around the country would change their signage this week as part of the company’s celebrations of Australia Day.
…Australia is the only country in the world that refers to McDonald’s as Macca’s and the restaurant has formally submitted the word to the Macquarie Dictionary for consideration in their next update.”
I was almost going to LOL, but they’re doing this shit FOR AUSTRALIA DAY.
Also, FUCK THE MACQUARIE DICTIONARY.
GOD HELP ME I MISS AUSTRALIAN MACCAS COKE SO MUCH *cryface emoji*
Maccas coke is the best hangover cure ever.
“The world-first change - a temporary measure - comes after a branding survey commissioned by the fast food chain found that 55 percent of Australians called the company by its shortened name.”
I am more like THE FUCK DO THE REST OF THE WORLD CALL IT? THE FULL FUCKING NAME?! Seriously, my head is spinning that if I said to someone overseas “Let’s go to Macca’s”* they wouldn’t know what I was talking about.
*not something i would actually say
I’ve heard non Australians call it McDs, or MickeyDs?
I used to teach this name to my students in Tokyo, and their common name for it was マクド (makudo)
I was surprised that the majority of my non-aussie co-workers there just called it straight up McDonalds…us Australians love our lazy abbreviations
I’m glad the Japanese have a shortened name. I remember saying the whole name a lot during high school Japanese class. Makudonarudo is just not good marketing Lol.
My French friend called it “McDoo’s” but I don’t know if that was just her or what. I always thought that was cute. And IME Americans really don’t call it Mickey D’s, that’s more an advertising thing. It’s just McDonald’s.
