In the two years that the Democrats had the White House, the House, and the Senate, we got Wall Street reform, student loan reform, credit card reform, healthcare reform obviously, the Fair Pay Act, expanding of the GI bill, they re-authorized the children’s health insurance program, expanded national service programs, fixed the sentencing disparity for crack versus powdered cocaine. We got the 9/11 First Responder’s Bill, we got the Hate Crimes Act, they ratified the START Treaty between us and Russia on nuclear weapons, they repealed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, they did Cash for Clunkers, they did the stimulus which included the largest middle-class tax cuts ever. That was all done by the Congress that was elected at the same time as President Obama in 2008. They were elected in November 2008, sworn in January 2009 and over the next 2 years they got all of those things done. Then, the Republicans did really well in the midterms, and Republicans took control of the House for the first time in years and, John Boehner became Speaker. And since then, there has not been a single significant piece of legislation enacted into law.

Politicians pretend to value life while voting to take away funds for food from struggling families and children.

theguilteaparty

I’ve known people where their families didn’t have a lot of money, or even a little. Their school lunches where their only meals in the day. Think about that. They voted to take away their only meal.

neversaysdie

I have gone to a grocery store with my roommate and bought tons of pasta, peanut butter, bread, and ‘box meals’ the night before major school breaks, divided them into bags and boxes and then ‘casually’ asked kids throughout the day if they would mind taking them off my hands because I was going home for break and wanted to clean out my pantry.

Because I know that my babies LITERALLY depend on school for steady meals. One of the richest countries in the goddamn world and I’m sending peanut butter home with my students so they won’t go to bed hungry over Christmas break.

Fuck you, GOP.

And the Winner is (for the AXE Apollo space race contest by AXE- Malaysia) ROSE! Thanks for all the votes, as much as I DESPISE AXE and their method of advertising, I am happy that Malaysia will be sending their first woman into space and that she is very motivated, intelligent and qualified for the job.

The STAGGERING Study No One Talked About

vaginanews

A few weeks ago, the World Health Organization issued a report - the first of its kind - on  domestic violence wordwide.

The results are staggering.

Based on data from 1983 to 2010, 1 in 3 women on the planet has experienced intimate partner violence, and 40% of all women who are murdered are killed by a current or former intimate partner.

This has ramifications in all areas of women’s health - increased likelihood of sexually transmitted infections, depression and other mental illness, alcohol and drug addiction, unwanted pregnancy and abortion, and reproductive problems like low birth weight.

The report suggests the best opportunity to recognize and address domestic violence  is often in a health care setting - but heath care practitioners often lack the training required to see the signs, especially in the developing world.

Imagine a study that found 40% of all murdered men were killed by a current or former girlfriend. Even just a woman - any woman. Would have been a pretty huge story. We’d be having a big cultural conversation about what’s gone wrong and what we must do to fix it. But this? Nope.

Ask yourself why.

  • Women perform 66% of the world’s work, but receive only 11% of the world’s income, and own only 1% of the world’s land.
  • Women make up 66% of the world’s illiterate adults.
  • Women head 83% of single-parent families. The number of families nurtured by women alone doubled from 1970 to 1995 (from 5.6 million to 12.2 million).
  • Women account for 55% of all college students, but even when women have equal years of education it does not translate into economic opportunities or political power.
  • There are six million more women than men in the world.
  • Two-thirds of the world’s children who receive less than four years of education are girls. Girls represent nearly 60% of the children not in school.
  • Parents in countries such as China and India sometimes use sex determination tests to find out if their fetus is a girl. Of 8,000 fetuses aborted at a Bombay clinic, 7,999 were female.
  • Wars today affect civilians most, since they are civil wars, guerrilla actions and ethnic disputes over territory or government. 3 out of 4 fatalities of war are women and children.
  • Rape is consciously used as a tool of genocide and weapon of war. Tens of thousands of women and girls have been subjected to rape and other sexual violence since the crisis erupted in Darfur in 2003. There is no evidence of anyone being convicted in Darfur for these atrocities.
  • About 75% of the refugees and internally displaced in the world are women who have lost their families and their homes.
  • SEX-based violence, kills one in three women across the world and is the biggest cause of injury and death to women worldwide, causing more deaths and disability among women aged 15 to 44 than cancer, malaria, traffic accident, and war.

"The birth rate among teenagers reached another historic low in 2012, government researchers announced Friday, and there is evidence that a switch to more effective means of birth control is a factor.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the birth rate among young women ages 15 to 19 fell 6 percent last year, to 29.4 births per thousand, the lowest rate in the 73 years the government has been collecting the data. The decline was across all racial and ethnic groups.”

So let’s stop banging that drum, okay? That means out of every 1000 births, less than 3% are born to teen mothers. And this includes 18 and 19 year olds, so it’s even less if you factor out legal adults.

I bet if you removed the south and other major abstinence only states that already small number would drop off a cliff.

Though I also think if you looked just at those states the number would be much more alarming. Especially among women in lower income levels.

nonnegative

The 2012 per state breakdowns aren’t available yet, but in 2010, Mississippi had the highest with 55/1000 births and New Hampshire had the lowest with a mere 16/1000 (again, this includes 18 and 19 year olds, and I’m not sure about economic breakdowns). So yes, higher in traditionally abstinence-only education states, but not a hugely bigger number and the article notes that Mississippi had a 21% drop. Not that we shouldn’t get rid of abstinence-only education, because WE 100% SHOULD IT’S SO STUPID, but I’d guess the internet has a big hand in keeping those numbers low.

My original point, which I’m sure is obvious, is that claiming teen moms are the end of humanity is the worst kind of misogynistic hyperbole.
