may’s fanfic bookbinding comms! [PH only]

Hi! I’m starting local fanfic bookbinding commissions! Each book is hand-sewn with love by me, and made partially or completely out of recycled materials from my little home studio.

How It Works:

  • I can bind any fic that is roughly 10k words and up. It can be a favorite fic you love that you want to keep on your bookshelf and read over and over again, a fic you wrote yourself and want a special memento of, a fic you want to give a hard copy of to a friend as a gift–anything!
  • If you have shorter works you would like bound, you can combine them as a collection into a single bound book (for example, one book could contain 3 oneshot fics that are 2-3k words each).
  • Do you have an unpublished or self-published original manuscript that you would like bound? Want an extra-pretty copy of your thesis to keep for yourself? I can do those too! Basically, if it’s prose, I can bind it.
  • I can also make blank notebooks out of 90gsm paper!
  • I’ll ship to anywhere in the Philippines; I use Grab/Lalamove for Metro Manila and near-metro areas, and Gogoexpress for provincial areas. If you would like to request a different shipping method, just let me know and I’ll see what I can do!
  • By commissioning me, you agree that you will not sell fanworks for profit, and/or that you have the rights to/permission to use the original texts you are asking me to bind.
  • Authorship of the works bound is always clearly credited, and I am not claiming ownership of any of the works I bind. All profits go towards materials and labor, or charity if I am doing comms for donation drives.

Book Details:

  • All book pages are made out of 90gsm premium printer paper. The book covers are made out of reinforced board, and the spine and endpapers are made out of wrapping paper or other recycled colored paper.
  • The books are hand-stitched with waxed thread, so that they will lie flat when opened! This means you can read them easily even if you’re at a table or using a book stand.
  • Book sizes:
    • A5 - What it says on the tin! Pages are printed on A4 sheets folded in half to make an A5 size book.
    • A5 Trimmed - Pages are printed on A4 sheets folded in half, but trimmed around the edges to be smaller and to more closely resemble a traditional paperback book. My personal favorite size!
    • Long - The size of a legal sheet folded in half. Perfect for books with larger font sizes!
    • For size comparisons, please see the photos below.
  • Friendly reminder: the books are not waterproof! (I mean, most professionally bound books aren’t either, but you know.) I’m working on getting adhesive book plastic and once I do, I will try out covering the book covers to protect them better.
  • The binding is quite sturdy so you don’t have to worry about the books suddenly falling apart on you–but because they are handmade, they probably won’t stand up to being tossed around or shoved into a bag like any old paperback, so please keep that in mind too!

Procedure:

  1. To commission me, reach out to me @mayerwriting via Twitter DM, or shoot me an email at realmayerwien@gmail.com. I ask for a minimum of 30 days to produce a book.
  2. All I need is for you to send me the AO3/webpage link of the fic you would like bound, or the raw text of your manuscript in a Word document, and the size of the book you would like (A5, A5 Trimmed, or Long).
  3. Please keep the formatting as neat and simple as possible when you link/send the file to me (clean paragraph breaks, even tabbing/indents, etc.), for ease of layouting.
  4. I can print up to 3 colored or black-and-white illustrations in the book for a small additional charge, as long as: the art was included in the body of the work as it originally appears on AO3/the webpage (i.e. it is fanart illustrations or chapter headers made for the fic), and there is a clearly credited artist, OR you made the art yourself or commissioned the art for your own work, and you can provide the name of the artist.
  5. If you have any preferences for font choice, font size, section dividers, table of contents, inclusion of author’s notes, etc., please include those in your message as well.
  6. Once I confirm the text you’ve sent, I will request payment and proof of payment from you. (Don’t worry, confirmation of the text just means I’ve confirmed there are no issues with the formatting and it’s ready to be layouted; I won’t judge the contents of whatever you ask me to bind.)
  7. After confirming receipt of the full payment, I will first layout the work digitally, and send you screenshots of the finished layout to make sure you are happy with the look. Once you approve the screenshots, I will print the final book pages. No changes to the layout can be made after this.
  8. Once the pages have been printed, I will send you photos of the cover materials I currently have available, and you can choose which ones you would like me to use and how you want your cover customized. I generally hand-stamp book titles onto the covers, but if you would like any additional aesthetic details (your name hand-stamped on one of the endpapers inside, a quote from the fic on the back cover, etc.) just let me know! I’m happy to discuss the book design with you.
  9. Once you have chosen your cover, I will proceed with binding! No changes to the cover can be made after the book has been bound.
  10. I will send you a photo of your finished bound book, and arrange shipment to you! Once you receive your book, I would love to hear feedback from you; you can tag me in your posts on Twitter @mayerwriting!

If you have any questions, please feel free to shoot me a Twitter DM or an email! Thank you so much for your support!
