Yamaguchi peeked around his computer, trying not to be too obvious about looking, but he needed to look again. The new financial analyst was a fine-ancial analyst ahaha oh god, what?
Honestly, though, there was no denying the guy was hot. Yamaguchi noticed how people talked behind their hands as the manager took new guy around the department, so it wasn’t just him who’d noticed. But the fact of the matter was Yamaguchi was — well, not hot. A nice person, definitely, sweet, considerate, and a pretty good catch. Maybe cute from some angles, but even if — big if — this guy was into guys, too, there was no way Yamaguchi was in his league.
Yamaguchi shook his head and slapped the sides of his face, trying to snap out of it. Maybe he and the new guy could be friends! Drinking buddies! They could even play on the office’s volleyball recreational team! Having a new friend would be nice.
“Excuse me,” a bored voice said, interrupting Yamaguchi’s fantasies about camaraderie and manly high-fives after an awesome play. Yamaguchi looked up and found the new guy — Tsukishima — staring down at him, holding a stack of papers. “Can you show me how the copier works, Yamaguchi-san?”
“Ah!” Yamaguchi leaped out of his seat. “Just Yamaguchi’s fine. Or Tadashi! Because that’s my name. And sure, of course. That’s always the first thing I try to learn at a new job, too. It doesn’t matter how long you were in school, copiers are always tricky! When I started here, I accidentally wound up sending a thousand copies to print when I only wanted ten, and then they started shooting out rapid-fire. I was really embarrassed.” He scratched the back of his head. “I still don’t know how that happened.”
Tsukishima looked a little taken aback by the Yama-typical rambling. “Um. Should I ask someone else…?”
“No!” Yamaguchi yelled, then closed his eyes and mentally sighed at himself. He sucked in a deep breath and started to lead the way to the copy room. “I mean, no, it’s cool. I’m fine now, I promise.”
“Good,” Tsukishima said.
“I bet you think I’m pretty pathetic, huh?” Yamaguchi said, looking sideways at Tsukishima as they walked.
Tsukishima looked back. “I don’t think that,” he said. “I don’t even know you. I just thought you looked like you weren’t a complete idiot.” He paused. “Do you know Hinata?”
Yamaguchi hid his burst of laughter behind his hand; Tsukishima, he noticed, seemed pleased by his outburst. “Having fun with your new deskmate, I take it?”
“Oh, yeah,” Tsukishima said in complete deadpan. “Loads.”
“He’s got a lot of energy,” Yamaguchi admitted, snickering again. They stopped walking so Yamaguchi could help Tsukishima load up the tray and make his copies. Nothing shot out everywhere, which Yamaguchi took as a good sign. He screwed up his courage and added, “But if you want something a little more low-key, we could go get a drink later.”
“Just you and me?” asked Tsukishima, rushing to add, “Sure, if you’d like.” When he thought Yamaguchi wasn’t looking, the cutest little smile crept onto his face, which only made him more handsome. Oh wow, Yamaguchi was in trouble. “I like low-key,” Tsukishima said.
“Me too, Tsukki!”
“…Tsukki?”
