ACCA - Episode 11 thoughts
I teased @prillalar about haunting her with my ghost tsum when she suggested I leave behind my last words before I die from not talking about that last ACCA ep, but it really is a good suggestion because while I’m good at not spoiling people for plot points, it doesn’t mean I’m happy about keeping my big fat mouth shut. Anyway, I’m scheduling this for hopefully after most people have seen the episode, but I’m writing it about an hour after I watched.
First, after I saw the gun and realized who was taking a top-speed header toward Jean, I had a horrifying moment where I thought Nino DIED. I mean, I wasn’t as horrified as Jean in that moment, brokenly screaming for Nino as he realized Nino just got SHOT ON TOP OF HIM BECAUSE NINO THREW HIMSELF IN FRONT OF A BULLET MEANT FOR JEAN, but I was still pretty messed up for a minute. And then Jean’s pretty poker-faced for the last fifteen minutes of the episode, even more than he usually is, and saying he’s fine, when he so clearly isn’t. I know he’s a pretty quiet character, but he just seems so off, except maybe when he’s talking to Rail. Like, he straight-up lies to Mauve, and she knows it and the audience knows it.
Jean being so internal is frustrating in a good way. We know that when Jean’s telling Nino that he and Lotta don’t want Nino watching over them for the Dowa family, it’s because he doesn’t want Nino to feel obligated to him and, you know, Nino’s been his best friend for fifteen years and he’s not looking to end that. Nino, on the other hand, seems to think Jean’s telling him to fuck off to the ether again, what with his “just let me watch over you for a little longer” in the tag, but I love that fundamental misunderstanding between the two of them. It also made me laugh because dude just got shot, and all he’s thinking about is watching Jean some more. I’m reminded of Jake “the doctor said the bleeding is internal, that’s where the blood’s supposed to be!” Peralta.
And not to go on and on about the voice acting, but Tsuda Kenjiro is doing phenomenal work here. He’s all over the map emotion-wise, and nailing it every time. I’ve watched him in a lot of stuff and obviously he’s always great, but I can’t remember him committing like this. It’s basically like Suwabe and Victor in Yuri on Ice for me – an always great voice actor, who’s suddenly going above and beyond in a way I’d never considered before.
Anyway, yeah. ACCA was already pushing all my buttons and now it threw a hurt/comfort dream scenario into the mix, so I’m messed up but I’m happy about it.
The rest of the episode: I still don’t really get what Lilium has over Grossular. Maybe nothing. It could just be that he’s choosing the lesser of two evils. But I thought it was funny that Grossular also straight-up lied to Mauve, and she knows it, again. Episode 11: The One Where Mauve Sees Through Your Bullshit. Though honestly that’s all of the episodes.
Also, assembling all the district chiefs in one room really drives home that I have no idea who most of them are. There’s cute girl from the farming district, tall beard guy from the Les Miserables district, tiny guy from the giant district, and the rest.
