Figure skater Arthur Stuart, hailing from Manchester, England, has lost his motivation and decides to retire. With no way to start a new career at his age, he passes his days working part-time at the local ice skating rink. The most fun he can expect in a given day now comes from his only hobby, a trading card game. But then one day, out of the blue, he gets transported through time–back to the 19th century, to a fictional country closely resembling the Thai Kingdom.
Arthur manages to switch places with an English home tutor and slips into the royal palace. The king, hoping to replace the feudal royal family, takes great interest in Arthur. Initially unable to be accepted by the family, Arthur eventually becomes a respected figure by the royal children through the trading card game brought along with him in his time trip.
But we soon come to learn that the magic of the trading card game actually likes within Arthur himself. Using his magical powers, Arthur freezes the water in the garden pond and shows off his skating skills. The king is moved by his performance and has his children and members of his household learn the skill. Arthur and the others eventually put on a show based on the book “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” at a diplomatic event. It expertly blends ancient Thai dance styles with a modern ballet arrangement and is an instant hit. (The fictional country that closely resembles) the Thai Kingdom earns the esteem of other countries.
That evening, Arthur confesses to the King that he’s from the future. The King is shocked, but believes him–and then goes on to ask him what (the fictional country that closely resembles) the Thai Kingdom is like in the future, and why Arthur stopped figure skating.
The King has learned that figure skating isn’t something you do alone, but as a pair–and learns to skate from Arthur. “Shall we skate?”
Around this time, the royal palace erupts in a blaze, which quickly spreads to the city. The anger of the people suffering under tyrannical rule explodes. To save the country, Arthur uses the power of his trading card game to fight.
How will the kingdom fare? Will Arthur ever make it back to modern times? Will he be able to make an agreement with the trading card game sponsors?
*The movie was a smash, but many critics complained that the combination of figure skating AND a trading card game was too much, urging the creators to focus on one or the other.
