Oh man I used to watch this on PBS when I was like four or five I think and it gave me such a complex. The whole thing is that there’s a mannequin who comes alive at night and I remember one time he asked the lady something like, “But what happens if when I close my eyes and go to sleep, I forget to breathe?” and it just terrified me. I would try to stay awake as long as I could so I wouldn’t die in my sleep.
I was a weird kid.
Jeff Hyslop played Jeff, the mannequin and he was my #1 crush! He was in the panto of Aladdin and the CBC broadcasted it and Karen Kain, my childhood HERO, was Scheherazade and I have her autobiography Movement Never Lies and my mum took my sister and I to see his one man show when I was 10 and he signed my program !!! and now he teaches musical theatre in the little town near the island where my parents hae property.
TODAY’S SPECIAL!!!!
You know, before I had Internet access I was half-convinced this show was one of my fever dreams of my preschool years. But yes, Today’s Special!!! It was the best. I felt terrible every time Jeff lost his hat.
