“Tada —” Kei stopped suddenly and corrected himself. “Yamaguchi, we’re too old for this.”
“Nooo,” Yamaguchi said. “Come on, you’re just saying that because your legs are too long now. Just push me on the swings one last time, and I promise I’ll never ask you again.”
Kei rolled his eyes and crossed his arms over his chest, trying to ignore it when Yamaguchi stepped in and clapped his hands together, bowing with his eyes shut tight.
“Please, please, please, Tsukki,” Yamaguchi begged. The new nickname he was so proud of rolled off his tongue, easy as if he’d called Kei that all along. “I’ll be your best friend!”
“You already are my best friend,” Kei muttered, but he was walking behind the swing and waiting while Yamaguchi hopped onto it and started pumping his legs. When Yamaguchi’s back came toward him, Kei started with a couple of lackluster pushes, but his strength and enthusiasm grew as Yamaguchi shouted with delight.
“Higher, Tsukki!” Yamaguchi said. “Put your back into it!”
Kei laughed and shoved Yamaguchi hard enough that the swing’s chains slacked off. When he was really little, Kei thought if Akiteru pushed him hard enough, he could get all the way around the bar, that nothing could ever get in his way. That was dumb baby stuff he knew, but watching Yamaguchi’s legs reach higher and higher, his sneakers almost brushing the low branches of the trees, Kei couldn’t help but think — maybe.
“One day I’ll be able to jump this high,” Yamaguchi shouted over his shoulder as the swing soared higher still. “You too, Tsukki. Together, we’ll fly!”

Yamaguchi waved good-bye to Ukai-san and unscrewed the top of his orange juice. Tsukishima pushed off the wall when Yamaguchi came outside and held out his hand, immediately sticking the straw into his strawberry milk and taking a long sip.
They walked in silence for a while, the quiet pleasant and comfortable, like it had been for a couple of years now. Yamaguchi didn’t flinch away when his knuckles brushed against Tsukishima’s, and Tsukishima stooped awkwardly as they walked so Yamaguchi could tuck a tag back into his t-shirt.
They reached the intersection where Yamaguchi went one way and Tsukishima went the other. Maybe there would be a time where that would happen on a grander scale, but today wasn’t that day.
“Hey,” Tsukishima said, grabbing Yamaguchi’s sleeve. Yamaguchi looked over his shoulder, and Tsukishima’s face was suddenly very close.
Oh, Yamaguchi thought, finally.
Orange juice and strawberry milk didn’t make for a great combination and the kiss didn’t last very long; they were out on the street in broad daylight, after all. But the moment was an inevitable one, one that Yamaguchi could have pushed for just as easily.
“I’ve been thinking about that forever,” Tsukishima confessed, once they pulled apart.
“Me too, Tsukki,” said Yamaguchi. “You don’t even know.”
“Oh yeah? Try me.”
Yamaguchi laughed and reached up to touch his mouth, right where it still tingled. The next time they did that – and there would be a next time – Yamaguchi was going to be the one to do it.
Tsukishima grabbed Yamaguchi’s hand then and tugged him along in the direction of his house, cementing their convergence, at least for now.
if any haikyuu!! people want to hit up my ask box with tsukkiyama fic requests, i feel like i’ll 110% be in the mood to write them this weekend. let’s say i’ll take… five? maybe more if anything really grabs me.
anon is on! you don’t need to be following me already!
I have THREE so far, and they’re all good so I could definitely see myself doing more. Don’t be shy! Or do that’s what anon asks are for.
i’ve now done five, i have four more in my ask box (and one’s a doozy in the best way, hoo boy), but i’m having so much fun that i’m still taking requests! so don’t feel bad if you think you’re late because you’re not.

Tsukishima slides the infrared goggles onto his face, checking the spectral thermometer for any spirit activity. “Are you getting this?” he asks Kageyama, who’s behind the camera. Kageyama shoots him a thumbs-up.
They go creeping further into the house, Tsukishima wrinkling up his nose to get the goggles to stay in place. They’re so uncomfortable, but he supposes that’s just part of the job. A successful glimpse into another plane of existence is the only reason he’d ever wear contacts voluntarily, even if Yamaguchi does say his eyes stand out more without his frames.
Speaking of Yamaguchi, he can hear him in another part of the house, narrating what he’s doing to his crew. He usually has a whole team of people with him because he’s featured far more often on their show, which makes perfect sense to Tsukishima. He only agreed to the show in the first place because it gets their research the funding it needs; Yamaguchi is easy-going and charismatic and likable, and his face goes bright red every time Tsukishima mentions those facts to him, which Tsukishima likes very much. It’s almost worth feeling his own face heat up when Yamaguchi says they have to keep in Tsukishima’s segments because he’s their eye candy.
“Look at you, Tsukki,” Yamaguchi had said just this morning, gesturing. “I mean, seriously.”
“You seeing anything?” Kageyama grunts.
Tsukishima shakes his head. “Dead end. No pun intended,” he says, and pauses. Kageyama doesn’t react. Idiot. Yamaguchi would have laughed.
Suddenly, there’s a scream on the other end of the house; Kageyama and Tsukishima stare at each other as the thumps of panicked footfalls grow closer and closer.
“Tsukki!!” Yamaguchi cries, barreling directly into Tsukishima’s arms.
He’s so surprised by this happening that he just holds on, muttering, “It’s okay, it’s okay,” to Yamaguchi without even knowing if everything is okay. But Yamaguchi relaxes minutely while Tsukishima squeezes him tight, so that part is okay, at least.
“We saw something,” Yamaguchi gasps breathlessly. “A spectre, seemed friendly, probably a woman. We were talking to her! On camera! Then she — it — screeched so loud, and — and —“
Hinata trails in then, covered head-to-toe in slime. Tsukishima’s eyes widen and, as one, he and Kageyama burst into laughter.
This is the best day ever, for so many reasons, but mostly because after everyone’s settled down, Yamaguchi doesn’t let go.

Hinata rolls the dice, muttering something about please please be good to mama this time under his breath.
“What did you just say?” asks Kageyama.
“Nothing!” says Hinata, waving his hand in front of his face.
The dice stop. Tsukishima peers over his trifold at them and consults his manual. “Whoops, you died. Rest in peace, Ranger,” he tells Hinata, who lets out a mournful howl. Kageyama snorts so hard that he inhales half his milk tea and Yachi has to thump him on the back so he doesn’t choke to death, while halfway to a panic attack herself.
Tsukishima grabs a bowl of popcorn and sits back in his chair, grinning.
“Enjoying yourself?” Yamaguchi asks, somehow not halfway to a panic attack himself. Maybe he feels Yachi’s got that covered, Tsukishima’s not sure.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Tsukishima says lightly. “I don’t control the dice.”
Yamaguchi snorts. “No, but you love lording over the pandemonium. Tsukki’s chaotic evil.”
“Hey, you and I both know I’m neutral all over.” Tsukishima smirks and passes the popcorn over to Yamaguchi, who scoots over to take it while sliding his foot out of his indoor shoe. His big toe is halfway up Tsukishima’s calf when Tsukishima freezes in his seat, wondering if anyone else has noticed them playing footsie under the table.
“Not so neutral now, are you?” Yamaguchi mutters out of the side of his mouth. He grins wide and casually tosses a handful of popcorn into his mouth, while Tsukishima’s blinks at him. Which one of them is supposed to be evil again?

Well. Yesterday hadn’t gone exactly as expected.
It was Yamaguchi’s first long weekend since they’d started at uni, and he took the train into Tokyo to see Tsukishima. That part was as expected. Also as expected was Tsukishima meeting him at the station and taking him on an abbreviated tour before going back to Tsukishima’s apartment. Tsukishima had also expected the fond feelings that washed over him as he watched Yamaguchi talk animatedly on his couch, catching him up on all sorts of nonsense for the first time in person in three months.
for @neverregretthyfall who asked for fluffy post-training snuggles and other fluffy goodness. :D

Yamaguchi tried not to freak out after practice when Tsukishima tiredly plopped his forehead onto Yamaguchi’s shoulder and mumbled, “I’m coming home with you tonight.”
Tsukishima had been working so hard in every practice lately, trying to build up his stamina so their chances at making both nationals and spring high would climb even higher. After all, they were third years now and had a reputation to uphold. But more importantly, it made Yamaguchi’s heart do a funny little thumping thing every time he noticed Tsukki pushing himself to his limit.

“Yamaguchi, this is ridiculous. It’s nothing.”
Kei can feel his face growing hot, so he looks up and away and refuses to meet Yamaguchi’s eyes.
“Shut up, Tsukki,” Yamaguchi says, busying himself with the antiseptic and the bandages. “What the hell is the team supposed to do without your hands?”
“It’s just a cut,” Kei mumbles, but he doesn’t pull away when Yamaguchi tugs his hand up. He peels the tape off of each of Kei’s fingers, going even more slowly when Kei visibly winces.
Kei wishes he would speed up instead; having all of Yamaguchi’s careful attention and gentle touches on him is so dangerous. They’re close enough together that Kei might get stupid ideas about how kissing him is a good plan. Yamaguchi’s fingertips skim along Kei’s wrist, sending a shiver down his spine.
The alcohol stings, but Yamaguchi starts speaking quietly as he applies it, his usual walk-to-school rambles, so familiar that Kei can’t help but focus on that instead of Yamaguchi cleaning his cut and applying a bandage. A moment later, Yamaguchi declares, “There! You’re fixed up.”
“Thanks,” Kei says, business-like, still unable to look at Yamaguchi’s face. He tries tugging his hand back, but Yamaguchi’s grip on it is still tight. He waits until Kei finally looks up and meets his eyes.
“One more thing,” Yamaguchi says, bending down to press a kiss to Kei’s palm. He looks up at Kei from under his eyelashes, head still bowed. “All better now, yeah?”
“Yeah,” Kei says roughly. “All better.”
