I saw a sad facebook post from the gay bookstore back in Ann Arbor where I used to live about how they hadn’t sold any books that day so I went on their online store and bought a couple, and while you don’t get #deals like elsewhere online, I’d love it if y’all would consider buying your next gay book from them instead of like, Amazon.

Tsukishima looks up from his desk, slipping his headphones around his neck. “Yes?” he says. There’s a girl standing over him, and she’s holding out an envelope. She’s pretty, at least as far as Tsukishima knows, tall with a glossy brown ponytail that spills over one shoulder. He doesn’t think he’s seen her around before, but Tsukishima doesn’t do a lot of noticing people. Yamaguchi’s lucky Tsukishima has finally learned the names of the team’s new crop of first years and he’s their vice-captain.

this turned out sappier than expected!! but it’s harukou-related for sure, taking place the night before the first round. the broken bike and tokyo tower mentions refer to this light novel story, which you should really read if you never have before because it is PURE 100% GOLD.

Yamaguchi raises an eyebrow when Tsukishima trails in after Kageyama and Hinata. The idiot duo bounces off god-knows-where, and Tsukishima will never understand where their energy comes from, not even if he lives for a thousand years.

“You were gone for a while,” Yamaguchi says as Tsukishima flops down onto his futon.

Tsukishima grunts. “We got lost,” he says, thinking of broken bike chains and racing toward Tokyo Tower. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

Yamaguchi laughs and shuffles over on his knees to sit closer. “Okay,” he says. “If it helps any, once you guys disappeared, Ennoshita felt bad about putting you on babysitting duty.”

“It doesn’t,” Tsukishima says grumpily. He glances around to see if anyone’s looking at them and, when he’s satisfied they’re invisible enough, he shifts until his head is in Yamaguchi’s lap. If Yamaguchi’s surprised by this nearly-public display of affection, he doesn’t show it, instead running one callused hand through Tsukishima’s hair. Tsukishima wants to hum as Yamaguchi’s fingernails scratch against his scalp, but settles for a contented sigh. His eyes slip shut as Yamaguchi digs in deeper.

“Are you ready for our first match, Tsukki?” asks Yamaguchi. “We’re officially at nationals! Can you believe it?”

“No,” Tsukishima replies to both. “Who can ever be ready for that?”

“So practical,” Yamaguchi teases. “Well, I think we’re ready. When we get back to Miyagi, we’re gonna return as conquering champions. It’s gonna be awesome.”

Tsukishima’s eyes flutter back open, and Yamaguchi smiles down at him. “Hey,” Tsukishima says, “I love you. You know that, right?”

Yamaguchi blinks about a hundred times because Tsukishima’s never said that out loud to him before, never even come close, and who knows if he’ll ever do it again. But Tsukishima is exhausted and so weirdly happy and excited right now, and so much of it is Yamaguchi’s fault.

“I might know,” says Yamaguchi eventually, once he’s recovered. He pauses. “Maybe if you say it again.”

Tsukishima fumbles for his pillow, and swings up and over, satisfyingly connecting with the side of Yamaguchi’s head. “Shut up, Yamaguchi.”
