Nobody gives the black girl mob credit for being smart as fuck. They clown but at the end of the day they are really intelligent.

And it’s not subtle at all.
Taystee is a math prodigy in addition to being well-read, Poussey is multilingual, Cindy just knows shit, Suzanne studies Shakespeare, Watson was a good student in addition to being a track star, Vee is basically an evil genius. Piper often learns the most from them; they taught her how to fight and helped translate Pennsatucky’s biblical threat.
The show flat out acknowledges the (academic) intelligence of the black inmates time and time again, but the audience collectively ignores it.

some review i read (the vulture?) pointed out that taystee is at least as smart as piper, if not several degrees smarter, and the only one of them to go to smith was the nice white lady. the whole show is a terrific illustration of privilege and how not having it fucks you the fuck over.

What’s Lost as Handwriting Fades

Does handwriting matter?

Not very much, according to many educators. The Common Core standards, which have been adopted in most states, call for teaching legible writing, but only in kindergarten and first grade. After that, the emphasis quickly shifts to proficiency on the keyboard.

But psychologists and neuroscientists say it is far too soon to declare handwriting a relic of the past. New evidence suggests that the links between handwriting and broader educational development run deep.

Children not only learn to read more quickly when they first learn to write by hand, but they also remain better able to generate ideas and retain information. In other words, it’s not just what we write that matters — but how.

Willow was even more fucking good at research than I thought.

When you think about it, this makes the fact that Sunnydale didn’t even have an accredited librarian even more egregious.

Yes, it’s great that Giles was a Watcher and was able to help Buffy keep the Hellmouth from swallowing the town, etc., but exactly who was teaching these students research skills that don’t involve ancient scrolls about demons? How are they going to be prepared for college?
