CONTINUE 51: DEVILMAN crybaby - Interview with Ucchi and Ayu (overview)
Yesterday I got my copy of CONTINUE 51. It features 50 pages of Devilman, including interviews with Yuasa Masaaki, Nagai Go, and the seiyuu (Uchiyama Kouki/Akira, Murase Ayumu/Ryou, and Han Megumi/Miki).

The pages about Devilman begin with these manga panels:

I’ve finished reading the interview with Ucchi and Ayu last night (they’re interviewed together), but I got no time to make full translations. I fell asleep rather early but here are the notes I made (it’s not comprehensive, there are many parts I haven’t taken a note of):
- Both Ucchi and Ayu have just read Devilman for the first time (after they got the roles I presume). Ayu said he was surprised because Nagai-sensei had written Devilman in his 20s and wondered how sensei could write it
- Ucchi said the scene that left most impression on him was the death of Makimura family in the original manga. “The display of Tare-chan’s death is..” (he didn’t finish) Ayu: “Yeah it was brutal”
- Ucchi was originally accepted to do audition for Asuka Ryou role (OMG lol) but they contacted him asking him to do Fudou Akira instead. He’s worked with Yuasa before, and he talked w/ sound director Kimura too, thus he decided to accept the role
- While Ayu recognised Yuasa as the director of Ping Pong THE ANIMATION, and because of that he felt happy just to be accepted into the audition. The lines for Asuka Ryou’s audition were difficult, and he was asked to use a low voice
- Ayu used voice that’s one-tone (? One octave maybe?) lower than his usual voice for Ryou, and although he was happy he passed the audition, he frankly thought voicing Ryou would be hard

This part is very interesting for me:
Q: Between Fudou Akira & Asuka Ryou, which one you can empathize easier with?
Ucchi: For me it’s Asuka Ryou.
Ayu: Huh? (Laughs) For me it’s Fudou Akira.
When I have time maybe I’ll translate it in full, and also the other interviews.

Related to my last post, if anyone wants to watch a show about a 30ish awkward depressive geek girl simultaneously falling for a guy IRL due to happenstance and unknowingly befriending him in an MMO, I highly suggest Recovery of an MMO Junkie (which drives me bonkers b/c that’s a completely inaccurate translation, but what can you do).
Refreshing aspects:
- Protagonist is female and above 15. (30, to be exact. Shocking.)
- Disorganized, unkempt, baggy eyes, stays up all night. Doesn’t like talking to people.
- Basically, BIG MOOD™.
- The guy is younger than her (2 years).
- Said guy plays an unsexualized female healer and the girl plays
a male tank.
- It is not VR, and nobody is stuck there.
- Tons of poking fun at MMO tropes.
tl;dr I love it and if you’re looking for a fresh take on slice of life or MMO/game anime, this is it.
oh sweet
