Gustave Courbet, Le Sommeil,1866.
Le Sommeil [The Sleepers], which depicts two women entwined in a post-coital embrace, caused a stir when it was first shown in the 1870s. The police were called in, and the painting was not shown again until the 1980s. But its brief showing had an influence on a number of contemporary artists, and helped challenge the taboos associated with lesbian relationships. For modern audiences it’s a good reminder that people in the 19th century were not ignorant of lesbian relationships, as we tend to believe. And it’s pretty damn sexy, don’t you think?
They called the police on this lesbian painting.
The best part is, the lesbian embrace isn’t even the biggest thing that made the painting so controversial, it was the art style. People in the artistic community at the time were wholly familiar with sapphic relationships being portrayed in art, but were used to these scenes being portrayed in the ‘academic art’ style, which consisted of smooth, simplistic, idealised versions of the nude female form. This often went hand in hand with the depiction of Roman & Greek allegories to illustrate certain ideals (think Cabanel’s Birth of Venus). Courbet’s journey into realism was met by heavy critique from the academic movement, as the women he painted were, well, more realistic. Leaving in details such as the rolls of fat around the ribs acted as a blunt reminder to the audience that these were not euphoric goddesses caressing in ecstasy, but ordinary women having a nap together after making love. Other realist paintings suffered the same controversy, Manet’s Olympia is a perfect example, where the problem was not that the painting depicted a nude woman in an erotic pose, but the fact that she was just an ordinary courtesan, given an identity & portrayed in a place of power & control. Realism humanized the female form in art, & removed it from its previous role as a representation of the ideal.
So what disgusted people about the painting wasn’t so much that Le Sommeil depicted two women, but rather that it depicted two ‘real’ women.
Artist: So I painted a couple of lesbians in bed.
Men: Niiiiiiiiiice
Artist: They have cellulite
Men: I AM CALLING THE POLICE
Feat. Suga Kenta, Kageyama Tatsuya, Kosaka Ryoutarou, and Miura Kairi.
Question cards!
Kairi’s card asked him to repent or confess to something he’s maybe done wrong, and he just kind of went blank, going, “But… comparatively, I’m a good boy. I don’t really have an answer for this.”
But with Ryoutarou making a face, Kairi then pointed out that if anyone would need to confess to anything, it would have to be Ryoutarou.
Ryoutarou: Me? No, I’m a good boy too.
Kenta: Well in that case, I mean, everyone’s good.
Ryoutarou: Well, ok, I guess I’ll admit to something.
Ryoutarou: I… the truth is, I love Haikyuu way too much.
Kairi: Shut up!

Ryoutarou and Kairi share briefly what it’s like to work on their character dynamics after what happens to them in the plot of Summer of Evolution. For SoE, since they got a lot of lines and since there were entire scenes for just the two of them, they were able to get a lot of feedback from the other actors, with suggestions and advice. Now, with fewer lines and fewer main scenes compared to SoE, they have a little more time off-stage to do mostly their own work figuring out the changes between them.

Kenta gave Kage-chan the task of explaining what Engeki Haikyuu is to the audience in an exciting, easy-to-understand way. Sounding almost rehearsed, Kage-chan delivered an explanation that sounded almost copy-pasted from the website so they tease him about his phrasing.
After that, Kenta gave Ryoutarou the task of explaining how they represent a volleyball game on-stage, and Ryoutarou fumbles his way through most of it, explaining how sometimes they use a real ball, and sometimes they dance (he does these little arm motions and Kenta was like, “That’s how we dance?!”), and that of course they do the motions of spiking and receiving combined with the projection mapping, etc…

At one point they ask Ryoutarou his height, then ask him to stand up, which he does verrrry slowly because the camera view would probably cut off his head. They do move the camera up a little to accommodate what he looks like when blocking lol. Then Kenta stands up so they can compare. Ryoutarou is 186cm tall, and Kenta is 166cm, so they show off their 20cm height difference.
Kage-chan and Kairi joke that they look like a father-and-son pair, and Ryoutarou puts his hands on Kenta’s shoulder. But Kenta goes, “Are you a dad or a mom? That’s what moms do!”
