I honestly can’t sleep thinking about this:
I read a post about someone asking Rin to fix the problem between Ikuya and Haru because Makoto apparently is “too weak and passive” to stand for Haru and shutting Hiyori’s mouth.
Makoto is, yeah, non-conflictive and PASSIVE AF. He is kind and tries to give everyone a chance BUT THERE’S A REASON BEHIND THOSE ACTIONS.
People fogets how real Hiyori’s words are and the reason they hurt so badly.
Hiyori IS FUCKING RIGHT.
Haru almost ruined Rin’s dream. Asahi almost loses the hability to swim freestyle because of Haru. Now Ikuya is losing it again only because he saw Haru and remembered how talented he was and the promised they made.
None of what Hiyori said is false and Hiyori didn’t BLAME Haru for that as well, he just pointed a reality. “Bad things happen to people who swim with Haru”.
Haru can’t control how good he is at swimming because is just who he is. The problem with that is the impact it has in other people. People who want to be the best.
IS NATURAL. We all have felt that when we heard about some genius kid who is perfect at something and had no effort or experience on that field.
Artist see other people’s work an feel depressed when the artists are younger than them. I have friends who study music and art and they practiced since they were born but then they see a drawing from a 10 year old Canadian who was already talented at the age of 8 and my friends loose it. Some of them can’t draw for weeks because they feel like they would never be good enough.
BLAMING IKUYA AND RIN FOR THEIR REACTIONS IS DENYING SOMETHING WE ALL HAVE FELT. HEY, THEY ARE HUMAN.
Makoto, Rei and Nagisa might be the exception because they are NOT competitive and only see swimming as a connection of their friendship but their dreams DO NOT depend on Harukas talent since they DON’T wanna be the best.
NOW BACK TO MAKOTO.
Makoto is the only character who is FULLY aware of Haruka’s talent and also understands how important it is for Haru to be in the water.
He tries with everything he has to protect NOT THE TALENTED BOY WHO SWIMS PERFECTLY but the very insecure boy inside Haru who CAN’T ENJOY SWIMMING BECAUSE HE MAKES OTHER PEOPLE FEEL BAD ABOUT IT.
Makoto is Haru’s stability. Makoto is the one person who doesn’t look at him for his swimming talent but for who he really is.
The same way Hiyori is the only person who sees Ikuya as special and unique. Which is why he is Ikuya’s best friend.
So Makoto can’t just JUMP to Hiyori’s throat because he, more than anyone, understands this. That’s why he worries. He worries over Haru because he KNOWS it HURTS HIM. BUT WHAT CAN HE DO?!
Makoto can’t stand up to Hiyori and say “Well, Haru doesn’t mean it” or “What you say is not true” or “People should just mind their own buissness” because it makes NO FUCKING SENSE. THAT’S NOT WHAT HIYORI IS WORRIED ABOUT.
IF FUCKING RIN ARRIVES AND TRIES TO EXPLAIN HOW HARU WASN’T THE PERSON WHO GOT HIM DEPRESSED IT MEANS NOTHING TO HIYORI.
IKUYA IS NOT RIN. He doesn’t want to be the best. Ikuya already is the MOTHER FUCKING BEST.
Ikuya wants what Haru has.
IKUYA WANTS TO BE SPECIAL SO BAD. Wants and ACHES TO BE DIFFERENT. But he will never BE like Haru.
He is special now but that cost him EVERYTHING. UNLIKE HARU who has friends, who didn’t needed special training, who is just a boy who is THAT GOOD.
The training he had made him lose his friends. He even questions himself when he reads the little mermaid.
What did I gain? And what did I lose? Was it worth it?
He has just one friend and maybe is because he never tried to relat to others because he just wanted to be a prodigy swimmer.
It will never be natural and innate for him. It costed him WORK. But he will never trutly be happy like Haru is now.
Until idk… Idk what would make Ikuya Happy. That’s what we will find out later.
PEOPLE are honestly missing the point of FREE! COMPLETLY.

The point I poorly tried to explain was:
Makoto was recieving a lot of hate from fans after that episode because he didnt stood up for Haru when Hiyori said Haru hurts people when he swims. Now I know it was just Makoto being passive and conflict-avoidant… But part of that was him not knowing how to react to that statement because he knew how delicate that topic is to Haru.
That was it.
Rin is way better at helping Haru actively. He probably could’ve gave more insight to Hiyori about it.
I guess we’ll never know🤷🏽♀️
As I wrote that I started to theorize other things on the show and it came out all together… So it makes no sense…
