Theme 02: “What would you like to change about him?”

Rin: Let’s see… it’s not something that needs fixing per se, but I think he should think a little more for himself…

Nagisa: Cuz Mako-chan is so kind~!

Rin: He’s always ready to give way to other people…well, I guess you can say that’s a good thing about him, though… does he even voice his own opinion normally?

Nagisa: Hehe, you don’t have to worry about that, Rin-chan. Mako-chan is surprisingly honest about his feelings, y'know?

Rin: Is that so?

Nagisa: Yeah! When we talk about a delicious cake shop, he’d look like he wants to go there, and on the release day of a new game he’d look really happy, and when he gets a bad score at a test he’d look pretty dejected…also, he’s terrible at the card game Old Maid!

Rin: Haha, well, I guess. That’s who Makoto is.

Nagisa: When Mako-chan is with us, he rarely talks about himself, right?

Rin: Aah… yeah, it seems so.

Nagisa: That’s because~ Mako-chan really likes watching people when they’re working hard doing their best, so he subconsciously ends up listening only. And when he does talk, it would be all about how wonderful other people are, and he gets so happy telling those stories~ I heard a lot about Rin-chan from him too, y'know~~??

Rin: W-what did he say!? That Makoto… but lately when we call each other occasionally, I find myself doing the talking most of the time, so maybe this is why.

Nagisa: Hehe, I too tell Mako-chan maaany things about us~! I love it when Mako-chan looks happy☆

Theme 01: “How would you describe Makoto Tachibana in one word?”

Rei: When speaking of Makoto-senpai, the fact that he is a reliable senpai who started the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club and brilliantly lead us as the club captain, comes to mind! I respect him very much! Also, together with Haruka-senpai, I guess you can say they “breathe like A and Un.” Their relationship is truly beautiful…!
(T/N: A-un no Kokyuu is an idiom that describes two people who are so in-tuned they are able to understand each other without using words or gestures)

Sousuke: Makoto just coddles him too much.

Haruka: What do you mean?

Sousuke: I said what I said.

Rei: Please, both of you! ….ahem…so, if you’re to describe Makoto-senpai in one word…

Haruka: Sloppy.

Sousuke: Big.

Rei: Huh!? Those are such insincere answers…!

Haruka: No it’s not. He doesn’t put the dishes back to the same place, and he leaves his laundry scattered around.

Sousuke: I don’t see many guys who meet my eye level, so he’s tall, right?

Haruka: He told me recently that he’s grown taller again at a physical exam for new students.

Sousuke: Seriously?

Rei: U-um… ehh, Makoto-senpai is, very kind and gentle…

Haruka: …you think so?

Rei: Huh? He is not!?

Sousuke: I don’t think someone who has such a hungry and powerful swimming style should be described as gentle.

Haruka: Rei, you too felt it when you swam with him, right?

Wow, that is legitimately horrifying.

I intended to help someone, but it turns out the thing I did kills people. The only moral option is … Doubling down and killing more people.

It all boils down to the different moral foundations people use. For progressives, care, equality and “freedom to” are the main building blocks for deciding whether something is just and moral.

- Does it harm people?
- Does it result in inequality?
- Does it prevent people from engaging in society?

As long as the proposed idea (behaviour, policy) clears those two hurdles, it’s good to go for progressives.This type of thinking is super compatible with consequentialism.

For conservatives, there are more foundations to consider - authority, loyalty, fairness, purity and “liberty from”. 

- Does it violate established social hierarchy? (in this approach, hierarchy is good and beneficial).
- Does it damage in-group bonds? (again, strong in-group loyalties are considered to be good).
- Does it fail to reward contributors and punish wrong-doers? (this is a big one - fairness is about just desserts and consequences for actions, not equality).
- Does it breach the sanctity of the body? (this is a complex one, rooted in cultural notions of disgust and body as a temple).
- Does it force people to engage in actions they disagree with? (this is the freedom from taxation, PC, and so on).

Libertarians pretty much care only about Liberty from things, usually the government.

This complex set of values means that the same idea or policy will get different moral evaluations. Let’s take a few examples:

Legalising weed: all fine in terms of the progressive foundations. But it breaches purity (the body is a temple) and to an extent interacts with conservative version of fairness by removing a punishment on what they consider to be morally wrong behaviour. 

Universal healthcare: again, all clear in progressive values. This policy will help. But in the conservative value set, the policy fails at fairness by ‘rewarding’ non-contributing behaviour (poverty and illness). Let’s not get into a debate over how this is even classified as behaviour rather than a condition. It also breaches freedom from for people who are mostly focused on being free from government, rather than private insurers. The interesting caveat is that purity should favour healthcare - if the body is sacred, we should as a society value accessible ways to keep it healthy and clean. However, because many health conditions have contributing behavioural factors, it can be considered unjust to help people out of the consequences of their actions - even at a net loss to society.

If anyone is interested, Jonathan Haidt writes a lot about the moral foundations, and while he’s often annoyingly centrist in how he presents the ideas, the research is pretty solid.

Makoto: Hehe, Asahi is struggling with Tsukushi-kun.

Hiyori: So that kid is called Tsukushi-kun.

Makoto: Yeah, he’s Asahi’s nephew. Toono-kun, I heard that you like cafes. What do you think of Marron?

Hiyori: I like the atmosphere. It’s exactly what an old-school coffeehouse would look like. If it serves good coffee, it’s usually a good cafe.

Makoto: That’s amazing, you know the taste of coffee! For me, black coffee is too bitter…

Hiyori: I think it’s just a matter of getting used to it. Tachibana-kun, isn’t there food that you’ve only learned to eat recently? Besides, I’m sure it’d be hard to keep that physique of yours if you don’t watch your diet, right?

Makoto: Hmm, actually I’m not particularly conscious about what I eat. But I’m in the habit of doing things like weight training and running, so I’m still continuing with those. Maybe I’m just the kind to build muscles easily in the first place…

Hiyori: Really, I’m so envious! My body is pretty toned as well, but I’m still not quite there. So where do you swim now, Tachibana-kun?

Makoto: Hmm, I swim at the community pool a few days a week, I think? Haru goes here often, too, so he tells me things like the latest regimen he’s been practicing. I wonder if the training regimen is different between Hidaka and Shimogami.

Hiyori: I’d think there’ll be some differences… that’s right. They just said there’s gonna be a meeting for a joint practice. Why don’t you come to join us? You study like, sports education? Something like that? There’s probably lots we can consult you about.

Makoto: Huh, is it something I can go to?

Hiyori: Why not? Judging from the way they’re talking about it, the joint practice is more like a social gathering than an actual club activity anyway.

Makoto: Hehe, Toono-kun, that’s rather kind of you.

Hiyori: Not just rather, I’m always kind.
