Again, this is just my opinion. I like this role because, despite its short few-episode run, it struck a chord with so many viewers thanks to its writing and strong voice acting. I won’t say much, but even if he was just supporting character, all Bungou Stray Dogs fans will say that the character has a special place in their hearts.

semi-imaginary-place

I’m… I’m in a bit of an emotional wasteland in the wake of ep 23. This episode tied together so many of my thoughts on this series, there are so many thoughts and emotions and too few words.

Sometimes we run with the wind as with Kakeru, but sometimes it blows strongly against us as with Haiji. We can’t control the direction the wind blows, only choose whether we run through it.

This was Haiji’s episode. Its the finale to his journey, his answer and his love letter to running. He needed the Hakone Eikiden. We all knew Haiji would give his everything for it. I both dreaded yet hoped against hope he wouldn’t destroy his knee. Yet he never sounded happier than when he was running section 10. Instead of watching from the side lines, at least just this once he wanted to run.

Haiji and Kakeru’s relationship has been the center of the series and we see that most clearly in the final distance to the finish line. This whole series has been about the 2 of them rediscovering what running means to them. For all that Haiji doesn’t let people in, he opens himself, is the most vulnerable with Kakeru out of all the characters. Haiji confides in him his doubts and finds support in him. Kakeru is the one to send Haiji off and Kakeru is the one Haiji sees at the finish line, his goal. In those final moments as his knee gives out, the finish line in sight, Haiji is finally at peace. He knows what it means to run.

And Kakeru witnesses Haiji in that moment. As much as Kakeru has inspired and mesmerized Haiji, represented what running is to him, in that moment too Kakeru clearly sees in Haiji what it means to run.

“You asked me once what running is. You said you wanted to know what it is. The answer is you. It’s you.”

There’s also interesting discussion on where the finish line truly is. Where does the white line beneath Kakeru lead? Just as in life there isn’t really a finish line, life doesn’t end after the race.
