(½)  “I told her right at the beginning.  I think it was our third date.  I said: ‘Carol, you need to know I have leukemia and a serious kidney disease.’  I just wanted to be fair and honest.  Carol had so many commitments already.  She was a widow.  She had a daughter.  She had elderly parents.  I didn’t want to saddle her with expectations that I’m looking for someone to take care of me.  I didn’t want to be a burden.  So I kept our relationship formal for a long time.  I’d just check-in and see how she was doing.  At first I was always looking for signals that it was too much for her.  That I was too much of a burden.  But we’ve been together for a long time now, so I don’t worry about that much anymore.  I still try to give her space.  We call each other boyfriend and girlfriend, which might seem a bit silly when you’re 68.  But we live in different houses.  We do our own laundry.  Some nights we cook dinner for each other.  Other nights we go to shows and museums.  Every year we try to take one big vacation.  We’re actually in Amsterdam because we’re leaving on a Baltic cruise tomorrow.  All these things are real blessings for me.  I’ve already lived longer than the doctors predicted, so I’m just trying to enjoy each day.  If I can just enjoy myself, then it’s enough for me.  Especially if I can help Carol enjoy herself too.”

  • Top - Akana (Kageyama) and Daigo (Hinata)
  • Middle left - Sean (Kinoshita), Ryousuke (Tsukishima), and Yoshinari (Yamaguchi)
  • Middle right - Sean and Yoshinari
  • Bottom left - Yuushin (Ennoshita) and Shou (Daichi)
  • Bottom right - Shou
  • Sean walking in on Ryousuke and Yoshinari taking their photo joking commented that everyone on Karasuno is getting along well.
  • Yoshinari thinks that Sean is too handsome and looks good from every angle.
  • Shou wrote in his blog that he was actually a little worried at first because there are so many really young cast members.  But everyone calls him either Shou-san or Captain and many of them practice volleyball even after rehearsals are over, and Shou’s been doing his best to teach them.  He thinks they’ve all gotten very close in only four days, which then made him think about the importance of “connecting” in volleyball.  He’s still very grateful to the previous Karasuno cast and the current staff and crew of the production and insists that everything is still very connected.  He’s really really looking forward to being able to perform it and he’s so grateful to be a part of it.  Tomorrow he returns to S.Q. Stage.

“I grew up in an orphanage with only boys.  I always wanted to learn some type of fighting.  But I got married and had kids, so I just never had the time.  But when I turned forty, and all the kids were finally grown, I decided to learn Judo. There weren’t many women in the class.  A few girls came in, but they never lasted.  They’d get married, have children, and eventually drop out.  But I kept going.  I became a brown belt.   I’d spar against men.  Sometimes new people would wonder what the old lady was doing there, but they learned soon enough.  I only stopped a few months ago.  But I’m still strong.  Feel my arms.  Notice I’m sitting alone right now.  I’m not afraid.  Everyone knows not to mess with me.  They can see in my eyes that I’m not scared.  I may be eighty-six but I could lift you off the ground and throw you over my shoulder right now.”
