These are a few things I found interesting in the commentary for episode 2:
When talking about the opening the voice actors comment that it is very nostalgic and Uryuu says that her and Utsumi and Suzuki (another producer who worked on it from the beginning) are all around the same age and so they just filled the show with all the things they liked from things growing up. Hatanaka then says that that means that stuff that it’s a lot like stuff they watched when they were in elementary school.
There’s also a lot of famous people all working on this series! So they make comments about how that makes this anime so amazing.
Ookouchi says that he was under the impression that it would be more of a battle anime when he first started working on it, and so at first he wrote the first part of episode 2, where Reki says he’s amazing, to where Reki punched Langa instead. Since he thought Reki would be upset that he hadn’t told him that he could skateboard and that he lied to him. Utsumi of course said this wasn’t the type of anime it was and it was really all about how to enjoy skateboarding. There’s fun in the battles at the S, but there’s also fun in just practicing with your friends, doing tricks for the first time, and watching videos together. So episode 2 is really all about the fun of skateboarding.
They talk about how who you skateboard with is also important for having fun skateboarding. The voice actors then talk about how they bought skateboards and started learning for the series and they didn’t have fun when they were practicing alone but it was fun practicing with each other. They mention how it even makes falling more fun because people react and you can laugh together about it.
They talk about how Langa’s mom really seems like Langa’s mom which of course brings up how Reki’s mom is voiced by Hatanaka’s actual mother. The casting director Mima Masafumi was in charge of it all and so Uryuu says they didn’t know that was how things were being cast until they were actually recording. When the staff were observing them recording she says they talked about how it was really good casting since they seem like mother and son and someone said “they’re actually mother and son!” Hakanata says he never thought they’d keep that casting all the way through. He thought someone would notice before they started recording and change it lol. Also Reki’s little sister (Koyomi) is his wife, so there was a lot of interesting casting in this series for him lol. Hatanaka says he should have a conversation with Mima about his casting and Kobayashi says that he’ll be coming to do a commentary sometime so he can complain then and Hatanaka’s like no I won’t actually be able to say anything lol. (btw Mima is going to be on the volume 3 commentary and hatanaka is not on that commentary… hmmm lol)
When looking at Langa’s resume, Kobayashi comments that Langa’s name kinda looks like it could say Kanga or Ganga and then comments about how during recording, whenever Hatanaka says Langa’s name, it sounds like he says Ganga a lot. They made fun of him for this in the after talks and stuff too. Hatanaka says he says Langa and people just can’t hear, but then admits that there are times that he listens back and it really does just sound like Ganga.
They talk about how Midorikawa and Matsumoto argued about how Cherry and Joe’s fights should go. Midorikawa said him being a gorilla was already obvious so he should call him a brainless gorilla and Matsumoto said he pretty much shouldn’t get angry about him calling him a gorilla at all. So they had a lot of fun watching them voice them.
When Reki’s mom comes on the screen they make fun of Hatanaka and he says his anger in the series is real because it’s really his mom lol. Also that her voice is normally husky but it was especially husky that day. The others say they sound similar and he says it’s embarrassing. He says people should imagine what it’s like to work and have your mom right there! lol
Ookochi says that Reki isn’t teaching Langa how to skateboard, but teaching him the fun of skateboarding and that when he realized that then writing episode 2 was easy. And Kobayashi says that’s why in episode 10 Langa realises that without Reki it’s not fun.
Hatanaka says that Miyake said to him at one point “you’re not a player anymore” and he was really worried Reki wouldn’t be a skateboarder anymore. Reki kept losing all his races and there were a lot of things in the series that said maybe he should just be a supporter and that he wasn’t a skateboarder and so he really wasn’t sure until it got to the end if Reki was going to continue skateboarding or not and he was scared. He thinks it’s a surprisingly realistic story in that way.
Hatanaka says that he would get into Reki’s emotions and when they were fighting he didn’t know how to talk to Chiaki. They live close and so they would go home together and it would be awkward.
