Ok so can someone explain to me how cryptocurrency pollutes? Like what crazy calculations are they running that they need enough brainpower to significantly effect things? Like I’m assuming what’s causing the pollution is increased electricity consumption but… how does sending lil pretend money tokens back and forth or whatever cause so much pollution?
Also, what the fuck is “mining”? How d'you mine… like bitcoin is not a naturally occurring resource, and I assume that you can’t just make it, cause that would make it instantly worthless… help?
So you get “coins” as a reward for performing the cryptographic calculations necessary to update the public ledger which is the blockchain. This is, by design, an increasingly complex and resource intensive process to slow down the collection of (intentionally finite) coins.
So every transaction with bitcoins requires the ledger to be updated with the current ownership of every already existing bitcoin, which also requires encrypting and decrypting a bunch of information and sharing it across the public ledger. So every transaction made with bitcoins increases the energy requirements of updating the ledger making it harder and harder to complete the latest version and get the coin which is a reward for doing that work.
There’s a lot I don’t fully understand myself but the long and short of it is that the actual value of any crypto currency is pretty much just what people agree on, except instead of a fiat currency where a government says it’s worth something and a mint that makes physical currency, there’s a bunch of nerds who agree that solving certain math problems is worth rewarding.
Feeling like adding on for a bit of context, I know it’s kind of hard to understand how mining for really any kind of crypto is hard to imagine, but seeing what a bitcoin mining facility looks like for the first time really helped me realize just how energy intensive it is.
See all these warehouses? They’re quite literally filled to the brim with specialized computers that do nothing but mine, each one filled with thousands of these computers, just row after row of this:
So all the power consumption winds up adding up like crazy.
Yep, that’s why cryptocurrency and NFTs are considered major contributors to pollution – because the energy needs of all those computers doing the calculation are equivalent to a medium sized country. Currently, crypto consumes more energy than Argentina.
Guess what’s inside a lot of mining rigs? Gowan, guess.
Graphics cards!
Lots and lots of these puppies side by side, spinning their little fans as fast as they can go because as it turns out: GPUs are perfect for doing the calculations required for mining cryptocurrency.
Which means amateur miners buy a lot of these things.
So many, in fact, that there is now (May 2021) a world-wide shortage of NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards and building a new gaming rig is damn near impossible because of the shortage.
OR you can pay a ridiculously inflated price by GPU scalpers on eBay.
Seriously. Places that sell GPUs impose quantity limits because if they don’t… some crypto asshole will buy out their entire stock in one go.
But the “good” news is that the professional miners (like the Bitmain site up there, in the photos) use dedicated ASIC mining rigs which don’t use consumer GPUs. But (bad news) they DO use the same sort of chips that NVIDIA & AMD rely on to make their products, which just starves the supply pipeline at a different point.
Bottom line: not only does cryptocurrency mining consume terawatts of electricity, it also consumes megatons of computer hardware. Which is expensive to produce (in resource terms, like rare metals, petroleum, water, electricity, paper) and will, someday, require even MORE resources to recycle. Or else it ends up in a landfill.
Note that current dedicated mining rigs are so highly specialized they are useless for anything other than mining. They cannot be easily repurposed to (say) sequence DNA or fold proteins for miracle cures.
What a waste.

was anyone gonna tell me that some nerds peepee poopoo “currency” is the reason why graphics cards are sold out everywhere or was i supposed to find that out from comments under a screenshot from twitter user whoreganic cop puncher explaining how bitcoin is just an artificially complicated math problem
Hypothetically what happens if an EMP goes off between those warehouses

The producers talk about ADAM’s secrets
Uryuu: He was the last character made, but he was there in spirit from the beginning.
Suzuki: Since SK8 is the story of ADAM searching for his “Eve”.
Uryuu: That’s right. Once the ateji* for his name were decided it was like he just broke free.
Suzuki: For his day job he’s a politician who is well liked with spotless integrity, so because he’s the one it would be the worst if people found out what he was doing, he wears a mask. His matador style came from a drawing that Director Utsumi did. From there Ookouchi took that and wrote the dialogue. Ookouchi just solidified Director Utsumi’s vision.
Uryuu: We also surrounded ADAM with music. All the way from when the scoring started in episode 1, to his skating scene in episode 5, the music was made to go along with the images. The musical team has strong feelings about ADAM.
*ateji are kanji for things that are chosen just for how they are pronounced and not for what they mean. They can be used to show a second meaning if you chose to do that though. In this case it is short for 愛を抱く夢(ai wo daku yume) which means, to dream of obtaining love.
(this interview came out right after episode 5 did)

News - Netflix revealed that not only will their live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop drop this fall, but that Yoko Kanno will be composing music for this version’s soundtrack as well. Famously, Yoko Kanno was the main composer for the original anime, though she was guided by series director Shinichiro Watanabe, who is also a music producer. As of this writing, Watanabe has not been announced as being involved in the series, so it’ll be interesting to see what Kanno creates for this adaptation.

The producers talk about Langa’s secrets
Suzuki: Langa’s a simple guy, he’s not really the type to care about things. I think Reki is the more fashionable one.
Uryuu: He’s not the type to think about what looks good on him. And I think it’s because he has that type of indifference that he’s able to just ignore ADAM’s passionate style of approach.
Suzuki: When everyone else around him is pulling back in shock, he just casually accepts ADAM’s flowers. It’s just his nature. He’s not one to show emotions, and the times he does show emotions are carefully calculated by Director Utsumi.
Uryuu: Also he’s a kid who eats a ton.
Suzuki: He can easily eat 10 hamburgers, and on top of that he can still eat a super poutine(a food famous in Canada). We didn’t realize when we were searching for locations to use in the show, but A&W(A fast food restaurant whose only locations in Japan are in Okinawa) actually has super poutine on the menu. Director Utsumi said “this is fate!” and got all excited.
Uryuu:
There are also scenes of him cooking, so I think he’s reasonably good at housework. Though having said that, I don’t think he has much in his repertoire. I think he only started after his father passed away so he still has quite a way to go.

The producers talk about Miya’s secrets
Uryuu: There are a lot of cool adults, so in our talks about what characters we absolutely wanted to see, I thought it would be nice if there was someone cute, who was younger than the protagonists but still a strong competitor.
Suzuki: It was Director Utsumi’s idea to give him clothes with cat ears on them.
Uryuu: He became a character where even his name is catlike. He does like animals though, especially cats. We determined that the clothes he wears at the “S” is merch of a game he likes.
Suzuki: However, he probably realizes “If I wear this I look cute” (lol).
Uryuu: He acts pretty mature but sometimes we do see his cute middle schooler side.
Suzuki: We see it more and more in the second half. He’s not good at making friends,so we really see him embrace Reki, we see that more and more in the second half so it’s really cute. I really think it made me realize that he’s a middle schooler all over again (lol).

The producers talk about Shadow’s secrets
Uryuu: Originally he was just going to be a character who disappeared after episode 1 but Ookouchi-san put him in episode 2 and we thought “this setting is really good!”
Suzuki: Director Utsumi decided that he’d work in a flower shop and that he’d like his store manager.
Uryuu: After that it pretty much stayed like that all the way up until the finished product. I never imagined that he would gain the older brother position.
Suzuki: The character really took on a life of his own (lol). Even for his voice, Miyake-san put a lot of himself into it. He said “we have a similar physique so it works!” (lol).
Uryuu: Director Utsumi came up with his looks right from the start. We determined that he definitely did his make up himself and always changes before heading to the “S”.
Suzuki: and that’s why it’s kind of lame…… (lol).
Uryuu: His SD mark isn’t a tattoo is it?
Suzuki: It’s removable. He probably doesn’t have the guts to get a real one (lol).
