Ah! That scene was not in Okinawa. It was in Canada!
This is definitely a Canadian graveyard. There are large plots of land made for people to be buried in front of the headstone. Also the graves are all written in English.
Japanese graveyards look more like this:
Since everyone is cremated in Japan it doesn’t require much room and so the graves are all close together. They usually have one big stone with the family surname on it and then a large base where you can put many of your family members urns under the one stone.
When people visit they leave flowers and light incense and sometimes leave food offerings for their family members.
